QUESTION: (Actually, this one is more of a statement given to me at a book-signing and I felt the need to address it) I would write a book, too, I just don't have the time. REPLY: Look, we all have lives away from the computer/paper/word processor/typewriter. We all have partners, children, animals, dirty dishes, laundry, jobs, dinner, other hobbies, ringing phones...that doesnt make you unique and it doesnt provide you with a good excuse not to write, if writing is what you want to do. If writing is something you really want to do, then you, like the rest of us, will find the time. It is that simple. Actually, it is that hard.
REPLY: Put the pen to the paper, or your fingers to the keyboard, and write. Just write. Dont worry too much about the storyline or the plot points. Just write. The story will oftentimes reveal itself to you when it is ready. However, the story will never reveal itself to you if you dont write at all. QUESTION: How do I get published? REPLY: Writing and rejection go hand in hand. Sorry - but that is the way it goes. Once you have a complete piece of work, submit it to everyone who accepts writing in your genre, then sit back and wait for the rejection letters to come pouring in. I have lost count of all the letters I get back from editors and publishers stating, We love your story and would be happy to publish, once you make a few necessary changes. Once the beginning, middle, end, all plot points, and every single character have been redone and altered, we will be happy to publish your work. Those are my favorite ones, but these
are always good too: If you have a question or comment, please write to questions.comments@jennifercaress.com |
